The arrival of Jesus' mother and His brothers resumes the narrative suspended in 3:21. Jesus' rhetorical question (v. 33) was not a repudiation of family relationships. He highlights the deeper issue of a person's relationship to Him. The natural family is balanced by the positive affirmation of a new 'family' of the true people of God.
