God's Will Be Done

55

Have you ever hesitated to make a request of someone because you'd already asked for so much? You say, "Sorry, just one more thing…" And then you cringe and make the request, expecting the worst. When we pray we can feel like we are always asking for one more thing. But what matters most when we ask is whether what we are seeking harmonizes with what the giver wants to give. Most of us don't ask too much of God. James says that we do not receive because we ask wrongly (James 4:3); we ask according to our pleasures not according to his will

In the third request we ask for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. For our wills to align with God's we need help. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts" (Is. 55:8-9). So Jesus teaches us to pray that God would bridge the chasm and make our ways and thoughts more like his.
