God's Answer to Loneliness

366

"Our need for companionship and intimacy are reminders that we were made for something more than this world can satisfy. You can have all the best friendships, the best marriage, the most satisfying intimacy with your spouse, and yet still feel empty. Friends, as long as we enjoy the gifts of Christ in human companionship and intimacy apart from the person of Christ, we will always be empty. Christ hung naked, beaten, and bloody on his cross for our sins. He was shamed so we could be righteous, and he is the only one who can ultimately satisfy our lonely hearts. In his perfect life, substitionary death, and glorious resurrection, Christ purchased a bride for himself for eternity. We sang in our hymn this morning, "From heaven he came and sought her, to be his holy bride, with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died." This is the mystery of marriage: union with Christ."
