The Lord's discipline within the Church purges out sin.

We see:

1: When sin is not "cut out", it spreads through the church.
2: Therefore, Christ requires that the old leaven be purged even to the extent of excommunication.
3: This is always done in the hope of reclaiming and regaining that brother or sister.
