The Example of Joseph
Series Series in Genesis
Aim: To follow in the steps of Jesus, our good shepherd.
Why there is more power in example than in precept: because models prove that victory can be won, and because people are inspired by incarnate courage.
Exegesis: Three encouraging motives to Spirit-filled living: Faithfulness will be crowned with success (v. 22); endurance will be rewarded with divine assistance (vv. 23-24); wholehearted love will be answered with God's smiling countenance (vv. 25-26).
Further application: How to follow Joseph's example: determine to keep a clean conscience, be willing to crucify sin, and be hopeful about the promises of God.
Key verse: v. 24 ''But [Joseph's] bow remained in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob (from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel)...''
