Good morning. I'm so glad you
guys are here. Let's pray together. Dear Lord,
I pray that you would teach us as men that we are the heart,
we are the soul, we are the backbone of the godly home. And I pray
that you would help us to become the men of God that would equip
us to have that, to have a godly home. I thank you for the men
that are here. I thank you for Charles Spurgeon.
I thank you for Chapel Library, and I thank you for the opportunity
to teach from this book this morning pertaining to the godly
home and the blood of the sprinkling and the children. So I pray that
you'd teach us this morning. For it's in Christ's name that
we pray, amen. So you've got your little program
there in front of you. I'm gonna read that scripture. Here we go. So, to kind of get
our juices flowing and get us to thinking about where we're
at, let's read the scripture, okay? Follow along as I read
it, right there in the front of your little book. Then Moses
called all the elders of Israel and said to them, go and select
lambs for yourselves according to your clans and kill the Passover
lamb. Take a bunch of high sip and dip it in the blood that
is in the basin and touch the lintel and the two doorposts
with blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the
door of his house until the morning, for the Lord will pass through
to strike the Egyptians. And when he sees the blood on
the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door
and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike
you. You shall observe this right as a statute for you and your
sons forever. And when you come to the land
that the Lord will give you, as he has promised, you shall
keep this service. And when your children say to
you, and when your children say to you, what do you mean by this
service? You shall say, it's the sacrifice
of the Lord's Passover. For he passed over the houses
of the people of Israel and Egypt. When he struck the Egyptians,
but spared our houses, and the people bowed their heads and
worshiped. So where are we at in this scripture? Who is the main agent of God
in this setting that we're in? The people are in Egypt. They've
been there for 430 years. God remembers them, and he sends
somebody to go get them out of Egypt. Who was that somebody?
Moses. So Moses goes, and God sent him
with power, and he sent him with 10 plagues, and he operated in
his power, and he operated in these plagues, and we come to
the last plague. And the last plague that we come
to that was going to finally get Pharaoh to the place that
he said, get these people out of here, was the plague of the
what? The plague of the firstborn. Firstborn of all humans and firstborn
of all animals would die on this night when the death angel came
through if something didn't happen. So God had a plan in which he
was going to cover the people with what? With blood. and the blood of a Passover lamb.
So they had selected this lamb and they prepared this lamb.
And so the night of the Passover, they killed the lamb. And what
did they do with the blood? They put it over the doorpost
and down the side post. So it's obvious to the Lord,
but it's also obvious to everybody else that these people are believers
and they have done exactly what God told them to do. They killed
the Passover lamb. So that's kind of where we're
at. So it worked just that way. The death angel came and you
can imagine being in your house that you couldn't what? you couldn't
go out of, and you hear all this going on in the community as
the firstborn of the animals and firstborn of the people in
the houses, they're dying. You can imagine, you can imagine
the sympathy and the angst of some people to go see what's
going on and to do what they could to help. But what God had
said, you can't go out until morning. because the blood is
covering the house. So that exactly happened. Pharaoh
said, get out of here, take them away, get these people out of
here. And so they finally left Egypt. And so after that time,
every year, the family was to observe the what over? The what?
Passover. The Passover. So every home,
every year after that, And still Jews are practicing this. They
remember the Passover. They remember the Passover to,
first of all, to remind who? Themselves of what God had done,
but also to teach the kids. Okay, so that's kind of where
we're at, okay? So now, what do we have that
we practice every first Sunday, and we're gonna practice this
morning, to remind us about the sacrificial blood of the Lord
Jesus Christ. What's that called? The Lord's
Supper. It's a picture of the sacrifice
of the shed blood of the broken body of the Lord Jesus Christ
that was offered up for what reason? for our sins. That's exactly right. So it's
a beautiful thing that happened. Oh my goodness gracious. 1,500, 3,500 years plus ago and
it was began then and it's something that we're still remembering
today, the Passover that led to the Lord's Supper and we continue
to look back at the cross and what Christ did on it. We're
in our 13th lesson, and they're all out of this book right here,
The Godly Home. We've got one more chapter. It's
a good one. It's about educating our children.
in the ways of the Lord. That's the next one, and we won't
talk much about it today, but I want to remember where you've
been. We started out with family worship because the context of
what we do in the home, the context of being able to answer the questions
that our children have, is going to happen in the context of family
worship. The family worship is three basic
things, praying together, reading scripture together, and singing
together. Well, during those times in the home were these
type of questions come up. So you think, why do we start
with family worship? Because family worship needs
to be established in the home, and it's basically three things,
and you can add two and take I don't know if you can take
away, but you can add to those as your family needs you to add
to. So that's what we started with.
Then we looked at two different men, Richard Steele, 1629, John
Bunyan, 1628, so they were contemporaries. We looked at the duties of husbands
and wives in some detail. And then we went to family duties,
which was Kind of the same thing by John Bunyan, you know, the
author of Pilgrim's Progress. So we looked at not only husband
and wives, but also the responsibility of children to them. And now
we're at the blood of the sprinkling and the children. And we're in
our second lesson because we've already looked in the blood of
the sprinkling We've looked at the importance attached to the
blood. Listen, guys, I don't know if
you can put too much importance upon the blood of the Lord Jesus
Christ and what he did on the cross for our sins, and it's
so important. And here's something I want you
to understand. The Lord's Supper, the Lord's Supper was made in
such a way that even young people can understand it. I'm talking
about children can understand it. I would be surprised if Joseph,
Jack, Jack, you're seven? And Ruger, how old are you? Six,
okay. Those guys are really close to
being able to walk you through the Lord's Supper and tell you
the importance of it and the meaning of it. And that's exactly,
we have, Let me see if I can get the right word. We've had low expectations of our children
when we should have had high expectations of our children.
They go to school, they learn to write, they learn to read,
they learn to memorize, and we don't expect much out of them
here at church. So we need to be about that.
We are using the book, The Godly Home. It does come from Chapel
Library. They do great work. They send
stuff throughout the world. And I didn't know, but I don't
know if this is in yours or not, but let me read you about what
it says at the end of this one about Charles Spurgeon. I don't
think you have it. Charles Spurgeon, from 1834 to
1892, he preached to 6,000 every Sunday morning, never had more
than a hundred or a thousand. He preached to 6,000. This was
Sunday morning and night. He never had over a thousand
members in the church. He's the most influential Baptist
minister ever, history's most widely read preacher. Today,
there's available more written material by Charles Spurgeon
than any other Christian author. It's amazing what he has written. And so we're benefiting of that
from today, as well as from John Bunyan and Richard Steele and
Edward Hooker, all because there's people who like Chapel Library.
It's their business, it's their ministry to find this old stuff
and get it to us. Now what do we call these guys?
There's a word we call these guys. Puritans, okay. Now, there were some radical
ones. They were pretty radical themselves, but we can't throw
the material out with some of the radical places that the Puritans
went, because we're all prone to that. So, we are looking at
the institute connected with the Passover. Spurgeon now says
that he wants to spend a short time in reminding us of the institution
that was conducted with the remembrance of the Passover, an institution
that we have. Now, why would we do that? And
y'all, I've got the scripture if you want to follow along.
You've got it in your notes. We're in verses 26 and 27. Now, here's why. Here's why we
do so much that we do. And when you're who? Children,
say to you, what do you mean by this service? You shall say
it's the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover. For he passed over
the houses of the people of Israel and Egypt when he struck the
Egyptians, but spared your houses. When your children ask you, what
does this mean? Now, I'm looking around a room
that Some of us, our kids are gone. But we've got to be the... Huge kids are gone. Tom and my
kids are gone, Paul's are gone, Theos is gone, okay? But we've
got to be, when God brings us a Matthew or when God brings
us a Tyler, we've got to, not just me, but you guys have got
to be able to do all you can to influence them to be the godly
man and to have the godly home that we all wish we had had.
Now, look, by the grace of God, we were having family devotion
in our home before I got saved, because I was taught in my readings
that I needed to do that. We have one daughter that was
probably two, two and a half years old before we started family
worship. Molly never knew a time that
we didn't have family worship. But it's important that we teach
our children. That's what I'm trying to say.
When your children ask you a question, you've got to be what? Ready. You've got to be ready to answer
that. You can't blow them off. And
as we go through, we'll talk more about this. So when your
kids say, what's this mean? But what are they probably going
to ask you this morning? Can I do it? And the answer is yes,
when you understand this. When you understand about the
blood and about the sacrifice and your needs. So you see, you
gotta be ready. And you can't blow them all. So, what we'll
say is, it's the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover. So, hopefully
that will lead them to ask, what was that, or what does it mean?
And that's why they did it, and after they left, that's why we
do it now, so the people can see. So, just think about this. Some kids are inquisitive. Probably,
Lewis has got four, you've got three. They're all different
in how many questions they ask and things like that. Some are
more inquisitive than others, okay? Some children ask questions
about the things of God at an early age, and others seem to
not be interested. It's just the way it is, okay?
Now, so, We need to ask ourselves, why is that? So could it be caused
by lack of exposure to the things of God or even our own attitude?
I mean, how interested are we in the things of God? They're
gonna, listen, that's gonna have way more influence upon our kids,
our actions, the way we do home worship, the way we go to church,
the attitude in which we go to church, the way that we worship,
the way that we participate during the sermon. Who's watching? Who's
learning? Who's going to do it just like
you did it? They aren't until they learn something better.
So it is important to explain to children the ordinance of
the Lord's Supper because what does the Lord's Supper show? The sacrifice of Christ. The
Lord's Supper shows the death of Christ. It's a symbol. And
listen, just think about this. I have a 22 year old that never
experienced the Lord's Supper until he was a seventh grader.
Why was that? He went where? Yeah, you know
where he went. He went to children's church. So, just like the church we went
to, we got through worshiping last Sunday morning, okay? As
soon as it was over, guess where the kids went? They went to Children's
Church. Parents didn't see them afterwards.
So when it comes time for the Lord's Supper, they're not in
there. Kids learn how to worship from
who? Their parents. And what happened
as they were kids, okay? So Spurgeon said in his day,
I regret that children do not more often see this ordinance.
Some churches do it twice a year. Some churches do it on Easter.
Some churches do it on Christmas. You've got to figure out a time,
but when you have it, it needs to be significant. So baptism
and the Lord's Supper should be placed in view of a rising
generation that they may ask us what? What does this mean? So what are we waiting for? So
how will they see these ordinances if they don't worship with us?
How will they see these ordinances unless we as a church practice
these ordinances? They won't. Now, let me tell
you, y'all already know this, the Lord's Supper is a perpetual,
a continually giving gospel sermon and focuses mainly upon the sacrifice
for sin. Now, you can stop, churches can
stop preaching the atonement, they can stop teaching about
the importance of the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, But, and
you could, we could be outlawed from preaching the gospel from
the pulpit or reading it from scripture, but if we continue
to practice the Lord's Supper, we would be practicing teaching
the sacrificial atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ through
the ordinance itself. It's a picture of what happened.
Okay? It's very important. You cannot
explain the broken bread and you can't explain the cup that's
filled with the fruit of the vine without a reference to the
Lord Jesus Christ's death. His blood shed and his body broken. You can't do it. Yeah, you just
absolutely can't do it. You gotta bring it in. So Christ,
you've got to look at the body of Christ, without bringing in,
in some form or the other, death of Jesus Christ was not only
done, but it was done for who? It was done in our stead. He
took our place. So our children then to see the
Lord's Supper, and we need to explain to them clearly what
it represents, the broken body and the shed blood. So in order
to do that, you've got to know it yourself. You've got to understand
it yourself. But I would tell you, do not
turn them away from it. Don't turn them away when they
ask a question. You may have to wait until you
get home. You may have to wait until you get in the car and
you may get your Bible out right then because the thought may
be gone by the time they get home. They may not be interested
then. So, you've got to have your ears open to the possibility
because the truth of it is from when we get up to when we lie
down. When we're on the road, when
we sit at the house, it's our responsibility to be looking
for opportunities to do what? Teach, all right, so I wanna
just show you the importance of this. This came to me during
my quiet time this morning. Preachers that are lost, preachers
that don't preach the gospel, inhale, I believe will be tormented
continually by people who they had an opportunity to be an influence
to, asking them over and over and over for an eternity with
the no hope of grace. Why didn't you tell me the truth?
It's going to be the same way with children. Oh, you took me
to school. You took me to the ball field.
We chased a soccer ball all over the world and inhaled. Every question will be, Daddy,
why didn't you tell me the truth? But at the same time, a lot of
us, we just hear and we not perceive what the creature's telling us.
And it had to be both ways. We want to be in front of the
preacher and we hear it and I even perceive or try to understand. Pass it on. Practice. We don't
need the same thing. Oh, yeah. It's guys, it's serious. It's for eternity. You cannot explain the broken
bread and the cup filled without a reference to the Lord's death.
Let your children then see the Lord's Supper and explain to
them clearly what it represents, the broken body and the shed
blood. Speak often in their presence of the sufferings and death of
Christ our Redeemer and the Lord Jesus Christ. Let them think
about Gethsemane, Gabbatha, and Golgotha. And teach them hymns
that speak of Christ and what He did on the cross. What did
we just sing? Jesus what? What are we teaching
our kids when we sing that song? Jesus paid it all. What did He
pay? Our sin penalty and being able
to talk about that. Tell them who it was that suffered
and why. And when their attention is pricked
about the atonement, He took our place, He paid our penalty.
Be ready to explain the great transaction by which God is just
and yet sinners are justified. So be ready to explain the transaction
by which God being just and sinners being sinners are at the same
time justified by the Lord Jesus Christ and his act on the cross. Just keep that in mind. 2 Corinthians
5.21, you ought to have it there. For our sake he made him to be
sin, who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness
of God. Let me tell you, children can
and will understand the doctrine of the atoning sacrifice. They
are at an early age, three or four, able to understand that
Jesus took our place and he paid our penalty. They've just got
to have it explained to them. So the gospel of substitution
is simple. It's a mystery that somebody
would do that, but it is simple. He took our place. I should have
died on that cross. We ought not to be content until
our children know and trust in their finished sacrifice. And who is their finished sacrifice? Christ Jesus. What do we mean? Their sacrifice. Not mine, but
their sacrifice. They need to understand that. This is essential knowledge and
the key to all other spiritual teaching. It's the key, it's
the understanding. If our children understand what
happened on the cross, listen, they will have started well. You with me? If that's the first,
okay, so Paul has got eschatology down. That's the end time. We need to have soteriology down,
the sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ, so we can
explain it to our children. So we gotta have it down, and
it's not difficult. Well, I'm gonna help you with
that when we finish up here this morning. So just remember, if
our children understand what happened on the cross, they've
got a good start. And there's not a one of you
in here that cannot explain to anybody what happened on the
cross. We just gotta teach it especially
to our children. So with all of their acquiring
of knowledge, whether it's homeschool or public education, if they
get an understanding of the substitutionary death of the Lord Jesus Christ,
they've got a good start. Okay. Now, this will require your teaching. Pablo got all around it. I promise you, if you pay attention
to me in church, your kids are probably gonna pay attention.
If you don't, they're probably not. But when they hear it from
the pulpit, and then you reinforce it at the house, that's when
it really clicks. And they pay way more attention
to you. Why? Because they know who you
are, they know from whom they've heard it, okay? Listen, you've
got the influence that I don't have. You're with them all the
time. So where to start? Romans 3,
23. For all have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God. For all have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God. If we say that we have no sin,
we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess
our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Now, I want to tell you, we are
about to mess uh we're we're about to mess in a lot of mama's
business uh right here and i'm going to tell you what i'm looking
at i had a little glitch in my notes so i kind of had to get
back to the spot okay so here's what i want you to understand
do not do not hesitate at all to tell the child of his sinfulness
and of his ruin. Listen, if you don't tell him
he's sinful, if you don't tell him where he's going to spend
eternity without Christ, he'll never understand the magnitude
of the situation. So, I was kind of looking for
a note here pertaining to that. Yeah, so let me just give you
a couple of things here. Our kids need to understand the
necessity that he needs a what? A savior. All right, you're at
your note there, Luke 13, three. Now, no, I tell you, but unless
you what? You a what? Does that include
your children? Correct. Who do they need to
hear that from? Us. From you. I'm telling you, it
was a long time ago. We were still in the other building. Jeannie was teaching the kids
that they were sinners. And I'm telling you, somebody not associated
with the church, but their kids were there, they were highly
offended. Mama was highly offended that Jeannie told her daughter,
third and fourth grader, that she was a sinner. I mean, highly
offended. Listen, if you had not come to
know your ruin, you would have never needed a Savior. Why would
your kids be any different? They're not a bit different,
and they're old enough to understand this. We need to keep that in
mind. Don't talk to him. Don't talk
to him about, don't hide their sin. I mean, they've all got
sin. Well, when they sin, they should
be reminded of it, that they've broken God's law. Okay? You need to keep that in mind.
He has to have some understanding of his or her sinfulness if he
does not believe in Christ. And so what you got to teach
them, look, you're a sinner. And if you don't look to Christ
as your substitute, if you don't look to Him as your Savior, it
won't go well in judgment. We've got to talk to our kids
that they have some understanding. We've got to keep that in mind.
Talk to them about judgment, and remind them that they'll
have to give their thanks of account to things they've done
in the body. Somewhere in here, he used the
words about, oh, being a good little boy. And he talked to
them about, he says this, and we're probably gonna get to it.
Some talk to children about being good boys and girls. So, you
know, why did I not get a young girl pregnant when I was 15,
16, 17 years old? My mama told me, my mama and
daddy told me that would be an embarrassment to them. we might
tell our kids, don't do something, don't commit adultery. And that
would be good to show them the law. But we also need to teach
them about grace and about forgiveness. And the reason that we don't
do those kind of things is because God said not to do those kind
of things. He gave us the word, thou shalt
not commit adultery. Not that I don't want to be an embarrassment
to my family, that is important. Or that I'm a good boy or a good
girl and I wouldn't do that. We don't need to put them off
into the law. Look at Romans 14, 11 through
12. For it is written, as I live, says the Lord, every knee shall
bow to me and every tongue shall concess. So then to each of us,
so then each of us will give an account to himself to God.
That's our kids. Look, and we don't know when
they're gonna, we don't know when they're gonna stand before
the Lord at judgment. We need to be talking to them
from the moment they begin to ask questions about their salvation. Matthew 12, 35 through 37, the
good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil
person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you,
on the day of judgment, you hear that? On the day of judgment,
people will do what? Give an account for every careless
word they speak, for by your words you'll be justified, by
your words you'll be condemned. So, what I'm talking about, guys,
we don't need to soothe the consciousness of our kids when they sin. We
need to lead them to what? Repentance. The seeking forgiveness
for the breaking of God's law, the seeking of forgiveness, and
who do they get that forgiveness from? From Christ and what he
did. So, labor to arouse the conscience
and pray God the Holy Spirit. Here's the other deal, guys.
None of this is going to happen without God's grace. I mean,
a family can have 18 kids, and 17 of them can be raised to know
the Lord, and one will go rebellious unless God works on him. It's God's grace still that does
it. So we need to arouse the conscience, and while we do that,
we need to pray that the Holy Spirit would work, that they
might become tender, and that they might perceive that they
need a what? A Savior. 1 John 2, 3 through 6, and by this
we know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commandments. Whoever says, I know Him, but
does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not
in him. but whoever keeps his word in him truly, the love of
God is perfected. By this, we may know that we
are in him. Whoever says he abides in him
ought to walk in the same way in which he walked." Listen to
me now. Children need to learn the doctrine of the cross that
they may find immediate salvation. As soon as Jack can understand
it, believe it, has put his faith, hope and trust and confidence
in it, and has a desire to make the Lord Jesus Christ the Lord
of his life, that's when he needs to make that decision. Whenever
Dad knows he's able to understand it, he needs to lead him to follow
Christ at a young age. And you guys know I'm not a proponent
of six and seven years old being led to the Lord and immediately
baptizing them. It's just that baptism deal,
we all understand that baptism deal is not something that has
to follow immediately. Now, for adults even, there needs
to be a little evidence. But for children, there sure
needs to be some evidence, because I want to tell you, if they make
a profession and get baptized, I'm telling you, and they're
not saved, it will be hard for them to ever become saved, because
they've done two things. They've said the prayer, and
they've got baptized. But we're looking right now at
James. Prove your salvation by your what? Yeah, examine yourself. Make sure you are safe. So it
is a tight rope. Joseph and Pablo and Amy, and
I've walked this out with a lot of people, there's a tight rope
between the profession of faith and when to baptize. And even
after we baptize, are we just gonna count our kids saved? What
are we gonna do? We're going to look for evidence.
And if they're not showing evidence, what do we need to do? We need
to tell them something's wrong with this picture that God might
bring them to conviction and still save their soul. Spurgeon says, I thank God that
we believe in the salvation of children when they're children.
Children can be saved. I pray that there's not a kid
in this church by the time they're 10 years old are not radically
saved, and it's obvious from what they become in the church
as a 10-year-old that they are saved. They ought to be, when
the doors are open, they ought to have their Bibles. That's
another thing. They ought to have a real Bible in their hand.
What are we going to do when they take the internet away from
us? Some people can't even find their Bible. Spurgeon, these are quotes from
Spurgeon, how very many times it's been my joy to see boys
and girls who have come forward to confess their faith in Christ.
And again, I wish to say that the best converts, listen, he's
talking about kids. And I'll tell you, they're gonna
be kids. Because when they got 14 years
of age back then, what were they? They were adults. We're talking
about young people. The most intelligent converts
we have ever had have been the young ones. And instead of there
being any deficiency in their knowledge of the Word of God
and the doctrines of grace, did you hear that? That it's all
but the grace of God, we've usually found them to have a very delightful
acquaintance with the cardinal truths of the Scripture. That
I'm a sinner, Christ is the Savior, He paid my penalty. They're able
to understand those things. Take hope, take hold, take action. Did you hear me? Take hope, take
hold, and take action that God's gonna save your kids and save
them early. How many of us would hold up our hands and say, you
know what, I just want my kids to wait, enjoy being young, and
enjoy their youth and things like that. Think about the awful
mistakes we made and the awful mistake that our kids make as
teenagers that haunt them the rest of their life. Be not convinced
to sow your principles in their minds that they may possibly
develop in after years, but I'm challenging you guys and praying
for you kids and your grandkids that they be saved when? Young. Now. Save them, Lord, and let
it be obvious to me and Mama and everybody else that they're
what? Saved. Should it be obvious that we
are saved? Yeah. Should it be that obvious
in our children? Absolutely. So, are they going
to lie? Are they going to tell a lie? Are they going to do sinful things
as kids? Absolutely. And we need to point
them out. We need to bring them to repentance. Expect fruit in your children
when they're children, and affirm the grace of God when you see
their fruit. 1 John 3.18, Little children,
let us not love in word or talk, but in deed and truth. As obedient
children, do not be conformed to the passage of your former
ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy
in your conduct. Kids, they're going to make mistakes. Do we make mistakes? I promise
you, theirs probably won't be any more glaring than ours. We
just might be a little more humbled by it than theirs. Pray for them
that they may not run into the world and fall into the evils
of outward sin. I've done the gospel study lots
of times. I've had two people walk out
of it. And one of them was a 18, 19-year-old young lady, very
bright, very articulate. She said, you know, I don't want
to hear the gospel. I don't want to hear that I need
to be saved now. She said, it really wasn't her
that walked out, it was her fiancé, and she went with him. But I
just want to live my life. Well, let me tell you, it's not
going well for her now, nor her children. Pray for them that they not run
into the world and fall into the evils of outward sin. Don't
we all wish we'd have taken a little different direction? And by the
grace of God that we're where we're at? And so then they come
back home with broken bones and all messed up, but they come
to a good what? A good shepherd. But they may
be by God's grace, rich grace, be kept from the paths of the
destroyer and grow up in the fold of Christ, for it's the
lambs of his flock and then sheep of his hand. So we want to simply
say, 1 Timothy 4, 12, let no one despise you and your youth,
but set the believers an example in speech and conduct and love,
in faith and in purity. One thing I'm sure of, Spurgeon
says, is that if we teach the children, listen to this now,
if we teach the children the doctrine of the atonement in
the most unmistakable terms, we shall be doing ourselves good. Spurgeon says, I sometimes hope
that God will revive his church and restore her to her ancient
faith by gracious work among children. If we would bring into
our churches a large influx of young people, how would it tend
to quicken the sluggish blood of the weak and the sleepy? Child
Christians tend to keep the house alive. Oh, for more of them. If the Lord will but help us
to teach the children, we shall be teaching ourselves. Just remember
that there's no way of learning like teaching. And you want to
know if you don't know anything until you can teach it to your
kids. So you just keep working on it. You just keep defining
it till you get it down. You know Deuteronomy 6, 4, 3,
9. Shema, a hero is the Lord of God, the Lord is one. Love
the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all
your mind and all your strength. These commandments I give you today.
Teach them to your children. Talk about it when you sit at
home, when you walk a long road, when you lie down, when you get
up. So what's that mean? All the time you're doing what?
Teaching the kids. Especially when they're inquisiting.
Especially when the opportunity comes up. What do you do when
you catch your child in a lie, or they've taken something that
didn't belong to them, or they've just obviously sinned? You sit
down with the Scripture, show them what they've done, and teach
them to be repentant, and to ask God for forgiveness. Teaching
our children should be a deliberate and constant effort. Huh? Is that not what Deuteronomy
says? Deliberate and constant, Ezra 7.10, for Ezra had his heart
and set his heart to study the law of God and to do it and to
teach his statutes and rules in Israel, in your house. So,
you do not thoroughly know any truth until you can put it before
a child so that he can see it. In trying to make a little child
understand the doctrine of the atonement, you'll get clearer
views of it yourself. I mean, almost every time I do
the gospel study, I learn some little different way to do it
that people might understand it. So listen, teach the gospel
to your kids. Teach the gospel to your family
often. What a mercy it will be, Spurgeon
says, if our children are thoroughly grounded in the doctrine of the
redemption. If they are warned against the
false gospels of this evil age, and if they are taught to rest
on the eternal rock of Christ's finished work, we may hope to
have a generation following us that will maintain the faith
and will be better than their fathers. I thought about my grandparents. I thought about my parents. All
right, so grandparents, my parents, me, mine, and now great-grandkids. Five generations. Do you know
how quickly all of this can be lost? One. One generation. But just think about this. If
this generation of this age right here, if they're raised up to
know the Lord and we turn them loose and they find a spouse
with the same goal in that, to have a godly home and to raise
godly offspring, think about how many generations that could
impact. I mean, serious stuff. So if they're warned against
false gospels this evil age, let me tell you what the false
gospel is, believe in God and be saved. I wanna tell you, that
is a false gospel. And that's what's being taught
in most churches. Believe in God. You just ask
somebody for going to heaven. What are they gonna tell you
every time? I believe in God. But read all this scripture about
you're keeping my word, you're living the life. No concern. Shacked up with somebody they
have no intent to marry? That's the false gospel. Now
listen. set their hope on the eternal rock of Christ's finished
work. We may have hope to have a generation following us that
will maintain the faith and will be better than us. Oh, by the
grace of God. But by the grace of God, you
know, my kids aren't doing it perfectly, but I think they're
doing it better than we did it. But they could do it better.
And I want to see my grandkids and my great grandkids, I want
to see them to do it better. And let me tell you what the
better is. The better is, is when spiritual things become
important in the house. Kids are smart. If we don't talk
about spiritual things at the house, what do the kids know?
It's not what? It's not what? It's not your
priority. It's not very important. It's just the truth. And is that
the truth? Your Sunday schools are admirable.
Now listen to this, and I'm about through. Your Sunday schools
are admirable. But what is their purpose if
you do not teach them the gospel? You get children together, you
keep them quiet for an hour, an hour and a half, and then
you send them home. What good have you done? We're dumbing down our kids,
and listen to what Matthew 18, you've got it, one through six
says, at that time the disciples came to Jesus saying, who's the
greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And calling to him a what? He
put him in the midst of them and said, truly I say to you,
unless you turn and become like children, you'll never enter
the kingdom of God, enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles
himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me. But whoever
causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it
would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around
his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. So now
listen to this. This is Spurgeon 2. So let me
see if I can help you with this, okay? So while raising your kids
in the church and taking them to Sunday school and taking them
to vacation Bible school, y'all listen now, may soothe our consciences
a bit, okay, of father and mothers, Why they send them to Bible study,
all the real good lies in what is taught the children and who
it is that's teaching the children. We don't just need to do things
to soothe our conscience. We need to do something that
would have an impact. And that is teaching our kids
the spiritual things that they need to know at home. The most
fundamental truth should be made most prominent. And what is that? It's what happened on the cross.
What happened on the cross? Why did the cross happen? What
happened when Adam and Eve sinned in the garden? What did God bring
them? He brought them clothing of skin.
He brought them a what? A sacrifice. What did God provide
when He sent Abraham to go out in the wilderness and offer up
His son Isaac? What did He send? He sent him
a substitute. Some, now here you go, some parents
talk to children about being good little boys and girls, and
so on. Don't embarrass your parents.
That is to say, they preach the law. Don't, don't, don't, don't. Okay? But what would they do
for an adult? They'd tell an adult that sin,
repent, and turn to God for forgiveness. We should treat our children
like little adults that can understand this. Matthew 19, 16 and 17,
Behold, a man came up to him, saying, Teacher, what good deed
must I do to have eternal life? And he said to him, Why do you
ask me about what is good? There is only one that is good.
If you would enter life, keep the commandments. So is this
honest? Is this wise? Children need the
gospel. the whole gospel, the unadulterated
gospel. They ought to have it. And if
they're taught of the Spirit of God, they're capable of receiving
it as people at a young age. Teach the little ones that Jesus
died, the just for the unjust to bring us to God. They can
understand that. You know, It's almost like that
they need to have a ritual, almost a rote. It's almost like we need
to teach our children and they have the capabilities of giving
the dialogue of what Christ did. They should know the gospel. in their mind well enough to
explain it. And as I finish up, I'll teach it to you. Teach the
little ones that Jesus died. First Peter 3.18, for Christ
also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous.
Can they understand that? Absolutely. That he might bring
us to God being put to death in the flesh, but being made
alive in the spirit. Luke 18.15-17, now they were bringing even infants
to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it,
they rebuked them, but Jesus called him to them. Call them
to Him saying, let the children come to me and do not hinder
them for such belongs to the King. We don't need to keep our
kids away from Jesus. When they're ready to run to
Jesus and His blood and what He did on the cross, we need
to encourage them to do that. Let the children come to me,
do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly
I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like
a child shall not enter it. So how do we hinder them? How
do we hinder our children? God's not a priority to us. He
won't be a priority to them. The church is not a priority
to us. It will not be a priority to them. His word is not a priority
to us. It will not be to them. We are
not raising our children first and foremost to know the Lord,
and secondly, that there is an eternity awaiting for us all. When do they need to start hearing
about an eternity? The youngest one over there that
his dad's holding, he needs to hear it now as his dad's teaching
it to the older ones and talking about it at home. That's when
they need to hear it. They need to hear it at a young age. Revelation
7, 9 through 12. After this, I look to behold
a great multitude that no one can number from every nation,
from all tribes and peoples and languages standing before the
throne and before the lamb clothed in white robes. with palm branches
in their hands and crying out with a loud voice, salvation
belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the lamb and all the angels
were standing around the throne and around the elders and the
four living creatures and they fell on their faces before the
throne and worshiped God saying, amen, blessing and glory and
wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our
God forever and forever. Tom, you got a pen in your hand.
our board. Okay, I want to, I had the board
over here and the board wouldn't work too well because of the
light situation, but let me ask you this, how many of you have
seen the little stick figure presentation that we do? Okay,
so I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm kind of going to give that
to you and I had, if I'd had the board over here, I could
have shown you better. You see a man, stick figure of
a man? Okay, every one of us in here,
every one of us, we have the knowledge and we have the responsibility
to be able to explain this within three or four minutes to anybody.
Okay, so that represents who? Us. All mankind. And all mankind
have done what? Sin, okay? We've all sinned.
All sin that falls short of the glory of God, right? So if we're
sinners, what do we need? A Savior. And what did God do? He sent the cross, and He sent
somebody to die on that cross. Who was that? His Son, Jesus
Christ. So He sent His Son, Jesus Christ,
to die on the cross to take our what? To take our place. Is that right? Okay, so that's
what happened. I'm a sinner, I need a Savior.
Who provided my sacrifice? Who provided my Savior? Okay,
God did. So now, the moment we believe
that, the moment we understood that we're sinners, we see that
Christ is our Savior. We put our faith, trust, hope,
and confidence in Him. We repent of our sins, turn from
going our way, turn from the sin that killed Christ, and turn
towards Christ in faith. and turn towards Christ to make
Him the Lord of our lives. The moment we do that, the moment
we give our lives to the Lord, a great transaction happens. What happened to our sins? They
get transferred to Jesus Christ. He took my sins upon Himself.
We just went through the Scripture, right? And at the very moment
my sins get transferred to Jesus, what does He transfer to me?
His righteousness. His righteousness. His holiness. His perfection. Yeah. holiness, perfection, righteousness,
all of those things. This is something that if you
don't have it, you need to practice it till you get it. And not only
that, but you need to have the scripture that goes with every
piece of this that you can show someone. Any questions about
today's Godly Home presentation? The Passover, the Lord's Supper,
and our being able to explain it. And who's able to understand
it? The youngest. I have no doubt that Jack and
Ruger and Joseph, I got no doubt that all three of those young
guys can do that with some clarity. And if not, they should be what?
Practicing. They should be talking about
it with mom and dad till they get it figured out. Step at a
time. Amen? Thank you so much. Guys, we're in a battle. Because
having a godly home is opposite of what the world's promoting. And raising godly children is
way too long be left to the church. And I believe until we make the
church a priority at home, until we make the Lord a priority
at home, the church is going to be struggling. That's what
I really want to say. Because then we get them here
and we've got to be convinced that what we're doing here is
important. But if you do church at home, church here is going
to be important, amen? Lord, I thank you for this material.
I pray that I've been, I thank you for your help and I pray
that I presented this in such a way that it can be embraced,
it can be taken hold of, and I pray that you would do with
this teaching, do with us, do with these families, do with
the families of the church, the new ones you're bringing around,
what you see fit to do for your honor and your glory. Lord, we
love you, we praise you, and it's in Jesus' name that we do.
Amen.
