Gethsemane

Christ was denied all comfort from heaven or earth. He prayed, and the disciples slept. What would cause him to be in such agony? 'This cup' was 'the cup of his (God the Father's) fury' (Isaiah 51:17). He would see the wrath of God, as a sinner will when he dies unrepentant. Why must Christ gaze upon this cup before he drinks it? It is because Christ's sacrifice was an offering of his free will.
