This week, Lord William will go out to Borame Park and reach out that way. So whether you go with us or not, we do ask you to be in prayer that many would receive the gospel today. For those of you who have the bulletin you see there in the center panel, the announcements, we do want to give our missionaries a special Christmas this year. I was thinking that one of the ways we could do that was we could have a card for each of our missionaries, perhaps signed by many of us here at the church. and perhaps one or two other things as well. But since our missionaries are abroad in other countries, we do need to get these things prepared by the end of this month. So I would like you to be in prayer about how we can be a blessing to our missionaries on Christmas. The last announcement there in the center panel there, well the last two, is that we do have the fellowship meal coming up at the end of the month, rather than third Sunday. Nevertheless, next Sunday is still going to be special. We expect to have several people joining the church next week. So we're excited. And I hope you are too. Today we're going to see grace in Genesis. Genesis chapter 4. Notice God's grace to everyone in this first family. There is so much sin Yet God graciously warns and spares those he could judge. Okay, I think that's given everyone time to turn to Genesis 4. Genesis 4, we begin at Genesis 4, and I will read verse 1 through 4. Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. And she said, I have gotten a man-child with the help of the Lord. Again she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. So it came about in the course of time the king brought an offering to the Lord of the first fruit of the ground, or of the fruit of the ground. Abel, on his part, also brought of the firstling of his flock, and their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offerings. Adam said to his wife, Hawa, and Dongchim, Hawa had left the house and had given birth to a child. And I said to her, Yehoah, Malmiah, and Dunamah, Grace did not accept it, offering for Mabel. Verses 5 through 7. But for Cain and his offering he, the Lord, had no regard. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. And the Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry? Why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? If you do not do well, sin. is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must master it. God's grace. God warned Cain. Verse 8. Cain told Abel his brother. They came about when they were in the field. Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. The grace of the immediate judgment, verses 9 through 12. Then the Lord said to Cain, where is Abel your brother? He said, I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper? Cain, the Lord said, what have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you. You will be a vagrant and a wanderer. The Lord said to the man, Where is my son Abel? He said, I don't know. I am the one who protects my son. The man said, What did you do? The blood of your son is calling to me from the ground. A plea for mercy, verses 13 and 14. Cain said to the Lord, my punishment is too great to bear. Behold, you have driven me this day from the face of the ground. From your face I will be hidden. I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me. So the Lord said to him, therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him with seven gold. And the Lord appointed a sign for Cain so no one finding him would slay him. Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son. Verse 18. Now to Enoch was born Ired. Ired became the father of Methujelah. Methujelah became the father of Methuselah. And Methuselah became the father of Laman. Verses 19 through 21. Laman gave to himself two wives. The name of one was Adah. The name of the other, Zillah. Adah gave birth to Jebel. He is the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. His brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who played the lyre and pipe. Now we'll bracket with births here, 22 through 26. As for Zillah, she gave birth to Tubal-Kain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-Kain was Nama. Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, listen to my voice. You wives of Lamech, give heed to my speech, for I have killed a man for wounding me, and a boy for striking me. If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold. Adam had relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth. For she said, God has appointed for me another offspring in place of Abel, for King killed him. To Seth, to him also a son was born. And he had called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord. Since Silla gave birth to Dwalgain, he made the sharpest machine in the East. Dwalgain's name was Nama. He said to Ramech's wives, O sea and Silla, listen to my voice. O Ramech's wives, listen to what I say. I killed a man through my creation, and I killed a boy through my name. The punishment for a sinner is seven hundred days, but the punishment for a man is seventy-seven hundred days. Adam and Eve gave birth to a son and named him Seth. Then God gave him a new name instead of Abel, whom the sinner had killed. Seth gave birth to a son and named him Enos. Then the people finally called the name of the Lord. The chapter begins with grace to Abel and ends with grace as people call on the name of the Lord. The Lord accepted Abel's offering and then the people called on his name. Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, we thank you that you are good. When we realize the extent of your love, we are amazed. Lord God, you love us with an everlasting, unchanging love. Lord God, this is a love that sent your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. This was a love that would cover sin by the blood of your Son. This is a love that makes killers, children of God, sons of God. You have saved such as Saul who became an altar boy. Your mercies are new every morning. The grace that you bestow upon us is such that we cannot fathom the greatness of your gifts. Lord God, you have blessed us with every blessing in Jesus Christ. And for this, we can only give you thanks. For this we can only love you for you first loved us and gave yourself for us. Lord God, if we are able to do anything for you, it is by thy grace. Lord, we want to serve you. This morning we want to worship you in spirit and in truth. Help us to do so. Father, strengthen those who are weak. Father, wake those who are tired. Help those who are burdened. Help us to see Jesus. Meet with us, fellowship with us today. Let us but see a part of your glory this morning and we shall be satisfied. As we speak of the sweet story of Jesus and his love stir our hearts. and equip us by that grace to go forth to proclaim the great commission with power. Help us Lord. Forgive our sins. Cleanse us. Make us holy now. Bless our missionaries. Protect them. Provide for each of their needs. And give them great fruit. Now Lord, we thank you that you will do as you have said, that your word will not return void today. We claim your promises in Jesus' name with this authority. Let us continue our worship this morning with hymn 27, Majestic Sleepless Sits in a Throne. Let's sing verses 1, 3, and 4. 1, 3, 4. There are many years, my brother, in sorrow and in happiness, On the fourth, it's last. Amen. We may be seated. We'll continue our worship this morning by taking our tithes and offerings. Let's pray. Our Heavenly Father, You have given us all things. You have given us life and breath. Your son has given us eternal life by his shed blood on the cross. Your spirit has given us abundant life as he fills us. All things come from you. And you have given us resources as well to feed us, to clothe us, to provide for our daily bread. We thank you. Now, Father, as we have a chance to give back some of what you have given us, we pray that you would use these funds to build your kingdom. As we share with our missionaries, as we work here in Seoul, Lord, we pray that this offering might be used by you to glorify your gracious, precious, holy, wonderful name. In Jesus' name, amen. so so so so have a final song before Children's Church and before the sermon. Those of you who have an interest in handbells are invited to stand by for practice before our outing for community outreach as well. 410, we'll sing verses 1, 2, and 3. you The third is the last. And I never thought I'd hear of you And I never thought I'd hear of you And I never thought I'd hear of you You may be seated. All right. Jenny and Ariel are taking the children now to... Appreciate that ministry with the children. I invite you to turn with me to 2 Timothy 1. Last week, you'll remember, we saw Paul's summons to suffer with Jesus as well as himself. That is found in 1 Thessalonians. And of course, it was appropriate to have that theme on a day when we prayed for persecuted brothers and sisters around the world as they do suffer for Jesus. Today, as we prayerfully go out to share the gospel, one gospel, to share the gospel with our neighbors in Borromee Park, let us go focused on the truth, that God has an amazing ability to transform lives by His grace. Realize that this amazing life changing grace in our lives glorifies God. As we looked at Genesis 4, we saw God's grace throughout a chapter of wickedness. If you think about it, God shows grace as he did with Cain every time he brings quick chastening, quick punishment or judgment. So our consciences are not seared or hardened. This is grace that we do not commit worse sins. When a sinner commits a crime, God will punish him immediately. Just like that, when we make a mistake, God will correct us and punish us immediately. This is a kind of grace. By doing this, our conscience will not be hurt and we will not feel guilty. This is a kind of grace that prevents us from falling into that state. Once again, I point you to our bulletin, 2 Timothy 2.1, we are commanded, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. As we bathe our souls in the truth, God is gracious. He is gracious to us. We will be strengthened to be unashamed of our gracious God. As God's redeemed people, we will be strengthened to do those things we ought to do in sharing the gospel. As we are strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, we will, by God's grace, be able to live righteously to the glory of his marvelous So today, as we examine 2 Timothy 1, verses 6-14, we are going to see Paul's laser-like focus on God's grace in Christ Jesus that was to be an example to Timothy. and which in turn inspires us. In 2 Timothy 1, verses 6-14, we're going to see three things. In verses 8-11, number one, we're going to see God's amazing, life-changing grace changed Paul. Number two, in verses 6 through 8 and 12 through 14, we're going to see that God's amazing, life-changing grace in Paul inspired or inflamed Timothy to use his gifts. by God's grace. And finally, this is the most important part. And we must not miss, we must understand number three, God's amazing life-changing grace in Paul and Timothy applies to us. He can also change you and So let's read verses 6 through 14. I will start by reading verses 6 through 8. Speaking to Timothy, Paul says, verse 6, For this reason, I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me, his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God. Therefore, I think of you to make the grace of God in you shine again with my mercy. Now verses 9 through 11. So we are suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, verse 8. who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light in the gospel, Verse 11, for which I was appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher. God saved us, and called us by his holy name. He did not do as we did, but did according to his will, and according to the grace he had given us in Christ Jesus before he died. Now that he has appeared as our Savior Christ Jesus, Now look at verse 20. For this reason, I also separate these things, that I am not. For I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day. Now verses 13 and 14. Retain. Keep. Hold on to. Retain the standard of sound words which you've heard from me. in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus, guard through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us the treasure which has been entrusted. Brothers and sisters, as we look at verses 8 through 11, notice God's amazing, life-changing grace did indeed change Paul. When you and I are overwhelmed by life, we cry out, stress, stress, right? When we're overwhelmed by life, A clear vision of who we are in Christ Jesus will strengthen us to persevere even in the midst of trial and adversity. Simply put, verses 8 through 11 is Paul's testimony. What was it that kept Paul faithful when he faced death at the end of his sentence? Sample report, the Worcester Gospel. We're going to see four things about the gospel in verses 8 and 9. Notice verse 8 that we have the gospel which is according to the power of God. What is the gospel? The gospel is a gracious demonstration of God's almighty In verse 9, we see that we are called with a holy calling, so the gospel is God's gracious call to us. Now, if you look at the 9th verse, there is an expression that says, you are called by the name of the Lord God. So, what is called a blessing is that God calls us graciously. Jesus calls us by name. All sinners are called to become saints. They are called to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. We who are saints, we who have believed in Jesus Christ, are called to be holy for He, our God, is holy. Saints, Christians are called righteous by the imputed righteousness, the given righteousness, as well as our actual righteous word. Ephesians 2, 8 through 10 tells us that we are saved by grace, through faith in Christ, but we are saved, verse 10, two good works. Brother in Christ, sister in Christ, God has robed you and I in robes of his son's righteousness. which because of the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on the cross for you and for me. Thirdly, we see that the gospel is God's gracious rescue. God is the one, verse 9 says, who has saved us. What have we been saved from? We have been saved from When we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, we are rescued from the penalty of death. We don't have to go to hell. Romans 6.23 decrees the wages of sin is death. but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. As we abide in Christ, not only are we saved from the penalty of death, we are saved from the power of sin over our lives. we are free from the shackles, the chains of sin that have enslaved us. Yes, when we are in the body of Jesus Christ, we are freed from the shackles, the chains of sin that have enslaved us. Yes, when we are in the body of Jesus Christ, we are freed from the shackles, the chains of sin that have enslaved us. Yes, when we are in the body of Jesus Christ, we are freed from the shackles, the chains of sin that have enslaved us. Yes, when we are in the body of Jesus Christ, we are freed from the shackles, the chains of sin that have enslaved us. Yes, when we But not only that, at death, when we are finally with our Lord and our God, we will finally be saved from the very presence of sin. As we glory and are glorified with Christ, we shall be like Him. If you are saying to praise God, If you are saved, thank God for what he has done. If you are saved, Trust God. If you are saved from sin, live for Him who died for you. Our brothers and sisters, we are saved from sin. But there's more. Not only are we saved from sin, we are delivered in our afflictions because God is with us. Almighty God above is with us in our trial. The Almighty God, who is in heaven, will be with us when we are in trouble and are in a difficult situation. in those trials. He gives us his strength when we are weak. He gives us wisdom when we know that we We have no wisdom of our own. We probably hate this. but he gives us patience as well. He gives us the strength to endure the patience. But the only way to give patience is to give us the hardships to work through. How many of us can testify to the times the Lord has delivered us from the miry clay of depression? When we did not want to get out of bed or to go on, God helped us to go on. It's exploding all around us. Brothers and sisters, like Peter, have we not all experienced miraculous deliverances from things that could ruin our reputation. We've experienced deliverances, things that would ruin our relationships. Remember Peter with It reeks and it was just a mess. Peter sinks in the waves. Yeah. He denies his Lord and his God. He spends time as a jailbird. He's imprisoned with the other apostle. And what did Jesus do? He lifted him up. He forgave and said, He sent an angel to stage a jailbreak. Brothers and sisters, our God delivers us in so many ways. And some of the ways God has graciously protected you You may never know until you see Him in action. Now in verses 9 and 10, we want to see the fourth thing about the gospel. The gospel is God's grace delivered for God's glory, his ultimate purpose. In showing his power, in calling his people and saving his children is his glory. God's grace is not because of our works. God's Grace, the gospel, is for his purpose, which is to glorify himself in us and through us. How does the Gospel glorify God? Look at what he does in the Gospel in verse 10. The Gospel glorifies God by God becoming man. God's purpose from all eternity past, verse 9, has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, verse 10. Christ, the invisible God, became man, he appeared, that he might appear as you and I are." God is glorified by showing himself as a man, the man, Christ Jesus. That's why Hebrews 1 says, Old Testament, good. Jesus, better. God's glory seen fully in Christ Jesus. John testifies we beheld his glory. Secondly, the glory of the gospel is seen in the history of life defeating death. Notice our Savior Christ Jesus abolished death. and brought life and immortality to life through the gospel. Jesus Christ died to eat death. He willingly, willingly laid down his life so you and I never will experience the second death described in the Bible. In John 11, Jesus told Martha, whose brother was in the grave, he that believes on me shall never die though he dies. The glory of the gospel to God is seen by the light defeated darkness. Look at verse 10. He brought immortality to light through the gospel. The last phrase of verse 10. In English, it's the last phrase of verse 10. In English. Not in Korean. I understand. So Jesus Christ said in John 8, 12, I am the light of the world. And we see in John 1 that he is the light that shone forth in the darkness. the light of the world in great darkness. And on the cross, as Jesus Christ was hung and lifted up, his love shone forth with the cry, Father, forgive them, for they know not. That love of God, Jesus Christ, that love pierced the dark veil, the curtain of ignorance, sin, and hatred. Now, therefore, you and I must, as children of God, walk in the light as He is. Paul testified grace that he experienced from the gospel of Christ Jesus, kept him going. Verse 12, for this reason I suffer these things and am not ashamed. The gospel kept Paul from quitting. He was not ashamed to suffer for Jesus. He was willing even to die for him who died for him. Now, quickly, Timothy. God's amazing life-changing grace in Paul inspires Timothy. We read verses 6 through 8 and we see that God has not given us the spirit of timidity. Does name-calling and slander stress you out? Does the thought of persecution scare you, frighten you? Does isolation, being alone intimidate you? Timothy saw Paul in prison. He knew Paul faced death. He had been Paul's aide, traveling aide, traveling companion. He'd been a pastor there in Ephesus. Now Paul would die and Timothy would be alive. Could Timothy stand without lion like Paul to inspire, encourage, strengthen him? Yes, he could. He could stay. He had her own mom. He had a mentor. He had an example to follow. Paul had gone before. And Jesus had gone before. Timothy, alone, could follow the examples of his Savior, Jesus Christ, and Paul, his Quickly, five things. I'll just listen for a second time. This is the root. Number one, Rather than letting enthusiasm and gifts die or grow cold, Timothy must stir up the embers Light the fire of his zeal and use his gifts. Verse seven. Instead of fearing, being afraid, and giving up, instead, Timothy had to embrace God's power and show God's love with a sound mind. Verse eight. It says, don't be ashamed. So rather than being ashamed of the gospel, being ashamed of fellow Christians, Timothy had to embrace suffering. Now we drop down to verses 12 through 14. And in these verses, in verses 12 and 13, we see that rather than doubting because of hardship, Timothy had to have confident trust in God and his power to save and deliver, just like Paul. Look at the example, verse 12. I know whom I have believed and am convinced that he is able to guard what I've entrusted to him. And so finally, in verses 13 and 14, we see that instead of exchanging his eternal reward for temporary comforts, Timothy had to hold on to his gospel treasure. He had to refuse to let it be debased into something worthless by taking away from the gospel or adding to it. Yes, the fifth and last thing that we can learn from the 13th and 14th verses is that King Timothy did not give up his eternal life for the sake of the comfort of the world. So retain the standard of sound words, verse 13. Verse 14, guard through the Holy Spirit the treasure which is then entrusted. We must not add to God's Word or to Him. Up to now, we've been looking at the biography of Paul and Timothy. But we can't be content with that. You see, God's amazing, life-changing grace in both Paul and Timothy must change us as well. As you've listened to the amazing, life-changing impact of God's grace in Timothy and Paul's life, have you taken a moment to Look at your own life. Have you been changed by believing in Jesus? My friends, I say this very seriously, very soon. If you are a Sunday Christian, If you are, during the week, living on the devil, if you are loving the world, if you spend your time wallowing, enjoying sin, 1 John warns you that you may If you attend church only on Sunday, and if you are a believer only on Sunday, and if you are a Christian only on Sunday, and if you live like a devil for the rest of the week, and if you love the world and live a sinful life, John 1 says, Now, earlier we quoted Ephesians 2, 8 through 10. Many of you have memorized that. You know that by grace you've been saved through faith. That, not of yourselves, it is a gift of God, not of works as we know it today. You absolutely are not saved by your works. Don't close your Bible yet though. That was verses 8 and 9. Read verse 10. If verse 8 is true, if you can say by grace through faith, we, verse 10, are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus' notice. four good works which God prepared beforehand so that we would be saved. My friends, in this quiet moment, examine yourself. Do you fully realize that you are a sinner? And I say this because I love you. You deserve to go down to be separated from God for all eternity. Examine your heart. Examine your soul. Ask the Holy Spirit to search you. Now, as the Holy Spirit helps you, I hope you will receive the guidance of the Holy Spirit and look at your hearts at this time. Oh, my precious soul, have you received God's free gift of salvation by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ? Wow, everyone, I earnestly ask you. I'm sure you are a child I assure you on the very word of God that God says, whoever believes on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ shall, will be saved. God has said. You can know God has forgiven you. First John 1 says that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. You have been holding on to any sin in your life. Get that right with God. He may be a backslidden Christian who has just walked away from God. He may be an unbeliever who has never known the Lord as your God. Whether you're backslidden or unsaved, the remedy is the same. Believe God is gracious and willing to forgive your worst sin. Confess your sin to God. Be washed free of your guilt, your shame. your iniquity. Isaiah 118 promises that though your sin has stained your soul with the scarlet shame of iniquity, the blood of Jesus Christ will be applied, you will be forgiven, you will be white. as snow. Turn your back on your sin and turn to God. And God promises, Christ Jesus' blood will be applied to you. You will be forgiven. But seek forgiveness. Seek cleansing. The wholeness that only I'm going to ask every head to be bowed, every eye closed. With no one looking around, maybe there are a few here who have never trusted in Jesus Christ. And if you know this morning, this afternoon, that you are a sinner, that you have never accepted Christ, and that you need Christ, Raise your hand. The word of God says that today is the day of salvation. Today, if you turn from your sin and trust in Christ, you can be saved. Is there any here that would say, I'm not a Christian as well? Maybe there are some here who, over the last week, maybe longer, have been harboring sins that you just refuse to let go. You've walked away from God. Maybe you're a Christian who has gone back to the slight chains of sin. It might be a besetting sin, it might be something that you just do not confess. I'm not going to embarrass anybody, but if you would like me to pray for you, please raise your hand. I don't want to give them all the protection, but I do want the Lord to have talked to one. We know your heart. We know your heart. Father, you search us and know us. You know when we go astray. You know when we fail or fall. But Lord, you are a gracious God. You love your own children. And Father, if any of us do have sins that have gone Let him confess. Father, convict. Do a work through your Holy Spirit that we might not be able to rest until we are once again right. Lord God, draw us, bind us to yourself. We do thank you for your amazing life changing grace that has changed us. And we pray that by your grace, you would indeed conform us more and more to the mind of Christ. Help us to follow Christ wherever he leads us. And to be faithful as Paul and Timothy were. We pray this in Jesus' name, with thanksgiving. For our final hymn, we will sing Come Every Soul by Santa Cruz, hymn number 326. We will sing the first three verses.
