Many commentators think that this passage is about acceptable giving in the eyes of God. But when you consider this passage in its surrounding context, it is clear that it is about a poor widow who is devoured by a corrupt religious system. In describing this passage, Matthew Henry hit the nail on the head when he wrote: Our Lord Jesus had just mentioned the barbarity of the scribes, who devoured poor widows, and perhaps this is designed as an aggravates of it, that the poor widows were the best benefactors to the public funds, of which describes had at their disposal.
