I Believe in Creation

41

God has "foreordained whatsoever comes to pass" (Q/A 7). This is how we understand God's decrees; his plan lies behind everything that happens. When we study the execution of God's plan for everything we turn to the doctrine of creation (Q/A 8). The doctrine of creation should lead us back to the God who decreed creation.

But it is possible to lose sight of God in our study of creation. Controversies about the precise nature of the days of creation or the age of creation can obscure the vital doctrine taught in Scripture: God created the heavens and the earth.

This basic truth should guide our study of the topic. We might have many questions about when God created or why he waited as long as he did. But Calvin's counsel on these matters is good: it would not be "useful for us to know what God … has been pleased purposely to conceal." Calvin also warns against "the tickling wantonness which urges many to indulge in vicious and hurtful speculation."

Let's avoid that. But let us affirm a strong biblical doctrine of creation that is practical for our walk with God.
