Here I Stand

Noted church historian Philip Schaff has said that next to the beginning of Christianity, the Protestant reformation was "the greatest event in history." At the center of the reformation was Martin Luther's willingness to cling to God's word regardless of the consequences. When I asked to recant of his writings at the Diet of Worms, he responded with the now famous words: "I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the word of God… Here I stand." The same challenge applies to us today: Will we or will we not stand firm on what God has revealed in his word?
