Ready for a new road

As the Lord's supper draws to its close, Christ asks his disciples about the past, and how he had provided for them. Then he gives them an instruction concerning the future, as to how they must prepare to be ready for a new road. What makes the difference? What shifts our Lord's instructions and provisions? It is the prophecy to be fulfilled concerning his death on the cross. The disciples seem to misunderstand our Lord almost entirely, thinking in terms of this world rather than the heavenly kingdom, and their response is rejected by our Lord. Until the Spirit is poured out, it seems that they will not really grasp these things.
