From the beginning of our Evidence
for God series, we made clear that we are not just positing
a bland or generic form of theism here. We believe there is evidence
for God and that the only God who fits that evidence is the
God of the Bible, who is Jesus Christ, the Christian God. Now why is that important? Because
believing in God is important, but only insomuch as it leads
you to repentance toward God with faith toward the Lord Jesus
Christ. Otherwise, you remain as lost
and damned as you were if you were an agnostic or atheist. James lays out the reality for
those who claim to be theists but not believers in Christ when
he says in James 2.19, Thou believest that there is one God? Thou doest
well, the devils also believe and tremble. How sad that so
many men and women have said, I believe in God, but were unwilling
to repent and believe the gospel in order to be saved from their
sins. And a lot of professing Christians don't like plain preaching,
but it's a fact. If you believe in God, but reject
the gospel of Jesus Christ, you go to hell, just like any atheist,
agnostic, Satanist, or any other Christ-rejecting fool. And one
sad example of this is a man who died about 14 years ago after
a storied career as an English philosopher. His name was Antony
Flew. Flew was an Oxford educated professor
whose father was a Methodist minister. He served in the Royal
Air Force during World War II and was a contemporary of men
like C.S. Lewis, But even with all of this
experience and influence, he declared himself to be an atheist
and wrote books like The Presumption of Atheism and other essays.
However, in his 70s, he began reconsidering his view of God
and by 2004, around the age of 80 or 81, he announced to the
world that he was now a theist. Some claim deist, but in interviews
he clearly didn't hold to the ideas of deism. But none of that
matters as far as Antony's eternal soul is concerned, because there's
no record of his ever receiving Jesus Christ. as that creator
who is his Lord God and Savior. There's no record of his faith
in the crucified Jesus who shed his blood in death and was buried
and then rose from the dead after three days. We only have record
of his rejection of Jesus in the gospel. That's a sad fact,
but it's the only thing that really matters. Belief in God
is the faith of devils if you don't also have saving faith
in Jesus Christ. In an interview with author and
apologist Lee Strobel, Antony was asked what he believed or
thought about Jesus, and his response is, again, sad. Mr. Flew said, quote, I don't think
I have any of this, you know, I think this is a defining case
of a charismatic figure. And if one were engaged in a
study of charismatic figures, this one, referring to Jesus,
would be compared with the major figures of any other religion,
end quote. Now Jesus himself said in John
3.19, and this is the condemnation, that light is coming to the world
and men love darkness rather than light because their deeds
were evil. But men like Anthony Flew go
beyond just rejecting the light. They actually attempt to refute
that light. They speak out against believing
in Jesus Christ, the light of the world. And it's because they
know that they're sinners and that they deserve damnation.
Now, how do I know this? Well, Jesus said, as I quoted
just a moment ago, but you'll also find it coming from the
horse's mouth, so to speak. In his interview, Strobel looked
at Antony Few and said, now, you said in 2004 that you hope
that there's no afterlife. Why? Antony Flew responded saying,
because I don't want to go on forever, and a fortiori, I do
not want to be tortured eternally. It's just so sad that a man can
acknowledge the evidence for the existence of God but have
no interest in the knowledge of who he is and no desire to
know him personally. He doesn't want there to be an
afterlife because he knows he'll be in hell if there is one. Well,
we do know who Jesus is. We have his infallible words
in our Holy Bible, King James Version, and we have his spirit. As believers in Christ, we have
his spirit in our hearts, indwelling us forever and ever. Amen.
