Doctrine of Eternal Generation of the Son Part 2

We are going through a doctrinal study on the Trinity, and examining some modern errors or heresies that can be corrected through a correct understanding of the Trinity.

Tonight, we will be continuing our study in the relationship of the Father and Son, particularly in the Doctrine of Eternal Generation of the Son. The New Testament uses the word mongenes, traditionally translated as "only-begotten", to describe this relationship. In our modern era, that word has been re-translated as "only" or "unique", leaving off the concept of begetting. Tonight, we will look at the this word in Scripture, its usage in church history and in the Baptist Confession, and in theology. By understanding a little better about the relationship of the Father and Son, we can understand the Trinity better, as well as our salvation. This discussion tonight will prepare us to discuss the modern error of subordinationism, and its ramifications.
