Let us go to the Word of God
from the Book of Acts, Chapter 2, verses 14 through 21. As we
continue our study through this book. I'll be reading in English, then
Juan will be reading in Spanish for all of us. This is the word of God. But
Peter, standing with the eleven, lift up his voice and address
them. Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this
be known to you and give ear to my words. For these people
are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour
of the day. But this is what was ordered
through the prophet Joel. And in the last days, it shall
be, God declares, that I will pour out my spirit in all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young
men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even
on my male servants and female servants, in those days I will
pour out my spirit and they shall prophesize. And I will show wonders
in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and
fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood. before the day of the Lord comes,
the great and magnificent day. And it shall come to pass that
everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Let us pray together. Heavenly Father, we thank you
that you have given us this great hope. It is the hope that our Lord
Jesus Christ will return and that those who call upon his name
will be saved and be with him forever. We thank you that you
have revealed this to our hearts. You have done it through your
Word. And those who have belief, it is because you have done it
in our hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit. We do pray
together that as we consider these verses, you strengthen
our faith. that you help us to look forward
to that glorious day. And we do pray together for those
in this place right now who still don't know you. We pray that you might send the
Holy Spirit into their hearts so that they might call upon
the name of the Lord as well. We pray all these things in Jesus'
name. This is the first sermon that
we find in the book of Acts. And it is a very special sermon
that had a very great impact in many people. And it has a theme that caught
the attention of many people. At least it caught my attention
when I was growing up. It is the theme of the last days. Thinking about what will happen
when our Lord Jesus Christ will come. My uncle used to visit my house
often, and he would always talk to me about the last days. And often I thought that he was
talking about something that would happen in the future. Not
realizing that the last days were happening right now. So
we're going to be considering three things from these verses
today. The beginning of the last days,
the end of the last days, and would you survive the last days?
Let us start with the beginning of the last days. We know from a previous sermon
that the disciples were all together waiting for the promise of the
Lord. The Lord had told them to wait
in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit. And they were
faithful in waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit. And the Holy
Spirit came upon them. We saw that at the beginning
of chapter 2, that they were all together in one room, and
they heard the sound of a mighty rushing wind. that filled the whole house.
And we also saw that they saw signs of tongues of fire rested
on each one of them in that room. And as they were filled by the
Holy Spirit, they were able to speak tongues that they have
never spoken before. We also know that it was a very
special time in Jerusalem. It was Pentecost. And the vowed Jews from all the
nations were in that place at that moment. So they heard the
noise and they went to that place where the disciples were together.
And what did they see or what did they hear? They heard these
Galileans Proclaiming the mighty works
of God in their own tongues. People from all these nations
were amazed and were surprised to hear the disciples of Jesus
speaking the gospel in their own tongues. And they were wondering, how
is that possible? How is it possible that Galileans are able to speak
our tongues? And one of the questions that
they were asking themselves was, What does this mean? They were
wondering, what does it mean that they can speak our tongues
and proclaim the worth of God in our tongues? But others in
the room, they thought that these disciples were just drunk. Therefore they were wondering,
what is happening here? And this is where we get to this
test today. Peter is standing with the eleven, lift up his
voice and start to explain to them what was happening. First of all, he said to them,
it is not possible that this man can be drunk. It is only
the third hour of the day. It is too early for people to
be drunk. Then, on the contrary, he explained
to them what was happening. And what he does is that he goes
to the Old Testament because the Old Testament was explaining
what was happening in that moment. There was a prophecy in the Old
Testament. From the book of Joel, that was
pointing to this moment where they were living. So what Peter
was doing, he was looking at that the event that happened
of the tongues, that the disciples were able to proclaim the words
of God in other tongues, and he looked back in the Old Testament,
and he says, this was already prophesied in the book of Joel. And if we will try to understand
the context of what the book of Joel is about, there was a plague of locusts
that attacked the people of Israel. And they have lost the harvests.
And they were suffering. And the prophet was pleading with the God's people
to repent. And that if they repent, God
will provide for them. But not just that, the prophet
also declares something that will happen in the last days. And this is what Paul and Peter
reads here. From Joel 2, 28 through 32. He says, and in the last days. Well, something important that
you have to consider here. When Peter says the last days
here, he was referring to that moment that they were living.
Because the last days, he's using this passage of the last days
to explain the moment that they were facing. And when did the last days start? The last days started with the
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus inaugurates his ministry
saying, the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in
the gospel. Jesus brings the last days. It's
the coming of the Kingdom of God to earth. And one important
mark of the last days is what Joel had prophesied. He says, and in the last days
shall be, God declares, I will pour out my spirit in
all flesh. Your sons and daughters shall
prophesy. Your young men shall see visions. And your old men shall dream
dreams. Peter is saying to those who
were present there that what they just saw was the fulfillment
of that prophecy. That those who were speaking in tongues,
that those who were prophesying in that moment were fulfilling
that very promise. of the Old Testament. That was
the beginning of the last days. Well, the beginning of the last
day starts with Jesus Christ, but the Holy Spirit plays an
important role for the New Testament church. It was laying the foundation
for the church of Christ. We read in Ephesians chapter
2 verse 20. 19 and 20. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens. But you are fellow citizens with
the saints and members of the household of God, built on the
foundation of the apostles and the prophets, Christ Jesus himself
being the cornerstone. Jesus Christ is the cornerstone. And he had provided the apostles
and the prophets to lay this foundation for the church. And
that fulfillment was happening at that very moment. Now let's move on to the end
of the last days. Then we read in our test. that Peter continues quoting
the prophet Joel. He says in verse 19 and 20, I
will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on earth below. Blood
and fire and vapor of smoke. And the sun shall turn to darkness
and the moon to blood before the day of the Lord comes, the
great and magnificent day. Again, Joel was prophesying that
mark of the beginning of the last days. But he moved forward
to that great and amazing days or magnificent day. It's the day of the coming of
our Lord Jesus Christ. And he describes some natural
things that will happen that will mark the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ. And everybody will be able to
see the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. And this will be a great and
magnificent day. It is the day when Jesus Christ
comes and destroys all His enemies, which are our enemies, death,
sin, and the devil. And we will be with Him forever.
But there is something beautiful that will happen also that day. That is not described by Peter
here because it hasn't been preached until that moment. Because we will have to move
forward for Paul to continue planting the churches and get
to Thessalonica and bring the gospel to them. And I want to highlight this
because it's something beautiful that happened also that great
and magnificent day. We find this in 1 Thessalonians
chapter 4 verse 16. For the Lord himself will descend
from heaven Chapter 4, verse 16. with a cry of command, with the
voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God.
And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive,
who are left We will come together with them
in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will be
with Him, with the Lord always. This magnificent day, when our
Lord Jesus Christ will come, those who have died will be resurrected,
and we will join them. with the Lord in heaven and descend
here on earth to be with the Lord forever. So, again, Peter declares to
those who were in that room that the last days have arrived, but
they were looking forward to that magnificent and great day
when our Lord Jesus Christ will come. Now, the question for you
and I is, will you survive the last days? Will you be there
with Christ forever? And this is answered in verse
21. He says, he shall come to pass
that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be
saved. How do you know if you will be
there on the last days to be with Jesus forever? You would have called in the
name of the Lord. You would have trusted in Jesus
for salvation. It is for you to understand that
Christ came to die on the cross for your sins. That by trusting
in Jesus, His righteousness is transferred
to you and counted as your righteousness. And therefore, you will be survived
by faith in Christ. It is because of your faith in Christ that
in the last day, in that great, magnificent day, you will be with the Lord
forever. And you might be here today because
you have already trusted in Jesus for salvation. And you should
have that great hope to see our Lord face to face at His second
coming. We have to remember that the
ordinary afflictions of this life are not worth comparing
with the glory that is to come. But if you are here today and
you don't know Jesus yet, I encourage you and exhort you to trust in
Jesus for salvation. I call you to call upon the name
of the Lord, because if you call upon the name of the Lord, you
shall be saved. And on the last day of the last
days, when our Lord Jesus Christ will
come, that great, magnificent day, you will be able to see
our Lord Jesus Christ face to face, and you will be with Him
forever. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you
for your goodness and grace. We thank you that you sent our
Lord Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our salvation. We thank you that Jesus Christ
on the cross paid it all. We thank you that you sent the
Holy Spirit into our hearts to give us faith. We do pray together for those
in this room that still don't know you. We pray that they might
come to faith in you as well. We pray all these things in Jesus'
name. Amen. Now we are going to partake together
of the Lord's Supper. Every time we partake together
of the Lord's Supper, we remember the Gospel. We do this, we take
these elements in remembrance of Him. What do we remember about Jesus? That Jesus Christ, who is God,
emptied himself, took the form of a servant, and came to this
world to die on the cross for you and me. That is the gospel. That by faith
in Christ, you will be saved. And every time we partake of
the Lord's Supper, we also announce His Second Coming. We announce this great and magnificent
day that we're looking forward to see our Lord Jesus Christ
face to face as well. Every time we partake of the
Lord's Supper, We remember the gospel, the good news. But there
is also a great blessing every time you take these elements,
that you are spiritually nourished by them, that you are spiritually
strengthened by them. Who is welcome to this table?
Anyone who has trusted in Jesus and has been baptized. If you
have trusted in Jesus and have received the sign of baptism,
please come and take and eat. And remember Christ. But if you are here and you are
not yet a Christian, we exhort you not to take these elements
as they pass by you. We encourage you to think about
this offering of salvation that can be also for you if you trust
in Jesus as well. Because you need to take these
elements in a worthy manner, which is discerning the body of Christ.
Understanding faith in Jesus. Let us pray together. Heavenly Father, we thank you
that you have given your Son to us. Lord Jesus, we thank you that
you gave your life on the cross. We thank you that on the cross
you paid for our sins. And Father and Son, we thank
you that you send the Holy Spirit into our hearts to give us new
life in Christ. We pray, Lord, that as we partake
of these elements together, You nourish our souls and strengthen
our faith. We pray all these things in Jesus' name. Amen.
